APPLE SCHOOL GARDEN. We are finishing up our Radishes that have been growing over the past few months and they are turning out beautiful and tasty! Our tomatoes were a success and now the radishes are too, we look forward to preparing the next vegetables we have in store for you! Apple School sends a huge thanks to Irina Roiz( Natalie’s mom from Green Apples) and her family for continuing to help us to maintain and grow the Apple School Garden!

A big thank you to Lidiya Yermak for coming to Apple School and doing a cooking class with the Red Apples! Lidiya is a professional baker and chef who did her first cooking class with the Red Apples and it was an absolute blast. On the menu was: Candy! Lidiya brought all the ingredients and explained how each one worked when mixed with the others. The ingredients were condensed milk, melted butter, cocoa, and crackers. The kids loved the sensation of getting their hands crunchy and messy while mixing all the ingredients. They loved the realistic feel of breaking down all the ingredients with their bare hands, and then constructed the final result. They topped it off with their choice of frosting. Seeing the focus behind the design for the frosting and how they measured the candy with their hands and on the scales was an incredible mesh of hands on learning, math, and science. They loved it! We look forward to inviting Lida back to see what amazing recipes she will have the Apple School kids put together!( you can check her work on Facebook or Instagram:byyermak). A big thank you to the people at Waste Management for visiting Apple School and giving the kids a great “Garbage Truck and Sanitation Demonstration”! The kids got to meet Richard, the truck operator, who showed all 4 of our classes how the truck works and used great descriptions for how the machinery handles the trash. The kids were ecstatic and amazed as they watched Richard move the truck forks up and down. Bree, the coordinator for Waste Management, gave the kids a quick explanation for how recycling works and why it was important. Towards the end of the visit Bree, V, and Rocio from Waste Management gifted all the kids some special goodies and prizes to enjoy after the event was over. Thank you again to Waste Management for coming to Apple School and for bringing their brand new truck for all the kids to see. The garbage truck day was high up on the children’s wish list so we are so glad to have made it happen. We look forward to many more community events in the near future!
A big thank you to Thura (Ethan and Zoe’s uncle) for coming to APPLE SCHOOL to talk to the kids about his job as an EMT! He brought a ton of things for the kids to see like his helmet, his big coat, and even had a little stuffed toy animal friend explain to the kids what to do in case of emergencies. Thura also showed kids how to bandage up an “ouchie”, and how to properly clean a cut if they suffer one at home. Thura was so kind with all the children in all four classes and all the kids had a blast trying on all the cool things that Thura brought. The kids felt like they had a real hero at Apple School as they all pointed to his shiny badge near his chest. We thank Thura and Myet (Ethan and Zoe’s mom) for coming to Apple School and visiting the kids while also educating them on what he does as an EMT and how to be as healthy as possible. We encourage all members of the community to visit the children of Apple School to give the kids a better feel for what the people do to make our city a better place to live.
